James Surls
James Surls : Born in 1943 , Terrell, Texas : Lives in Basalt, Colorado

James Surls makes powerful, mysterious sculptures, drawings and prints. His anthropomorphic forms made of wood, carved and burned, are intellectually challenging and visually compelling. Surls' drawing is energetic and direct, leaving room for the viewer to discover the poetic vision he has created.

James Surls made three lithographs with Shark's in 1999. Taking advantage of the translucent nature of Thai mulberry paper, the artist used several reds, printed on both sides of the sheet, to create a deep rich color over a fluid white line. "Blood Flower" and "Flesh and Blood" celebrate our connections to life and family.

James Surls' work has been shown widely. It is included in the collections of The Dallas Museum of Art, The Guggenheim Museum, NYC, The High Museum, Atlanta, Museum of Modern Art, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and numerous others.
