Rafael Ferrer
: Born in 1933
, San Juan, Puerto Rico
: Lives in Greenport, NY
Rafael Ferrer depicts the intense life of the Caribbean in his paintings and prints. With hot colors, deep shadows and mysterious relationships among his figures, Ferrer traces a line between European art and the tropics.
The artist has collaborated with Bud Shark since 1989 to make five lithographs, two woodcuts and many monotypes. With his strong sense of line and color Ferrer conveys a sense of the magic and mystery of his subjects--a boat on the shoreline, a fruitseller on the beach, or the sea at sunset.
Rafael Ferrer is represented in many public collections including The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Denver Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum, The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art.
"RETRO/ACTIVE: The Work of Rafael Ferrer" is currently on view at El Museo del Barrio New York through August 22nd, 2010.
